Meet Sheriff

Donald Smith

Donald L. Smith was born and raised in Augusta County, Virginia.  He graduated with honors from Fort Defiance High School.  Donald graduated Magna Cum Laude from Blue Ridge Community College with an Associate Degree in Applied Sciences Majoring in Administration of Justice.  He then graduated from the Police Academy and was hired as a Patrol Deputy for the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office.  He returned to college, graduated Cum Laude from Liberty University, earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice.

Donald faithfully served the community as a Patrol Deputy in Augusta County for 12 years becoming the youngest deputy ever to earn the title of Assistant SWAT Commander in 2009.  In November of 2015, Donald was elected Sheriff of Augusta County and has spent countless hours the last 3 years to make many changes in the department to better serve and protect the community.

Outside of his law enforcement duties, Donald enjoys farming and spending time with his family.  He grew up working on a beef and dairy farm and has continued his family tradition of raising beef cattle.  He was also very involved in the FFA throughout his school career.  He believes it is paramount to remain physically fit for his profession and makes it a part of his daily life. He is a member of Verona United Methodist Church and also attends Spring Hill Presbyterian Church with his 99 year-old Grandmother.

Donald’s training, experience, commitment, work ethic, and love for his community has driven him to seek re-election for the office of Sheriff in Augusta County.  With your support, Donald will continue serving as the “People’s Sheriff”, devoting his time and efforts, yet again, to ensure a safe and thriving community for all to enjoy.
